Title
[NotCVE-2026-0019] game-music-emu through 0.6.5 VGM Command Interpreter Missing Operand Length Check Allows Heap Out-of-Bounds Read
Summary
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NotCVE Advisory — NotCVE-2026-0019 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- [-] Summary: An out-of-bounds read in the VGM command interpreter of game-music-emu (libgme), the open-source video game music emulation library, allows an attacker who supplies a crafted .vgm or .vgz file to read heap memory past the end of the buffer holding the file. The read happens as soon as playback begins. CVSS:3.1 5.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:L). [-] Affected: game-music-emu (libgme) through 0.6.5 (present in 0.6.0, 0.6.3 and 0.6.5), and master as of commit fe8da4b. Default builds; no fixed version is verified. [-] Technical Description: The command loop of Vgm_Emu_Impl::run_commands() (gme/Vgm_Emu_Impl.cpp) is bounded only by while ( vgm_time < end_time && pos < data_end ) which validates the position of the opcode byte and nothing else. Each opcode handler then fetches its operands from pos unconditionally. The source records the gap in a TODO at the loop head: "be sure there are enough bytes left in stream for particular command so we don't read past end". When a command stream ends right after an opcode byte, the operand fetch crosses the end of the allocation made by Gme_File::load_(). Maximum over-read per handler: - PSG and Game Gear register writes (*pos++): 1 byte - 16-bit delay 0x61 (pos[0], pos[1]): up to 2 bytes - YM2413 and YM2612 register writes: up to 2 bytes - PCM seek 0xE0 (pos[0] .. pos[3]): up to 4 bytes - data block header 0x67 (pos[1], get_le32( pos + 2 )): up to 6 bytes The bytes read are consumed as sound-chip register data, so adjacent heap contents can influence the decoded audio (limited, indirect disclosure). AddressSanitizer aborts on the over-read; the researcher's two proof-of-concept files reproduce it at two sites (a trailing 0x50 PSG write and a trailing 0x67 data block header). Under a standard allocator a read of this size normally stays within the same chunk, so a crash is layout-dependent rather than reliable. No write, length control or code execution is shown. Reachability: VGM/VGZ support is in the default build. FFmpeg's libavformat/libgme.c calls gme_open_data() and then gme_start_track() inside read_header_gme(), so a server-side transcoder reaches the defect while merely reading a file's header. VLC exposes the library through its gme demux module, which handles VGM and VGZ. Title
[NotCVE-2026-0018] game-music-emu (libgme) through 0.6.5 Unbounded GYM Command Loop Allows Heap Out-of-Bounds Read
Summary
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NotCVE Advisory — NotCVE-2026-0018 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- [-] Summary: An out-of-bounds read in the GYM playback path of game-music-emu (libgme), the open-source video game music emulation library, allows an attacker who supplies a crafted .gym file to read heap memory past the end of the allocation holding the file contents, potentially terminating the process. CVSS:3.1 5.4 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:L). [-] Affected: game-music-emu (libgme) through 0.6.5 (present since at least 0.5.5), and master as of commit fe8da4b. No fixed version is verified: upstream issue #166, opened on 13 July 2026, describes the parse_frame defect and has had no maintainer response. [-] Technical Description: The command loop of Gym_Emu::parse_frame() in gme/Gym_Emu.cpp is while ( (cmd = *pos++) != 0 ) and terminates only on a 0x00 byte, with no bound against data_end. Operands are then read unconditionally after the opcode: int data = *pos++ and, for a YM2612 port-0 register write (cmd == 1), a second int data2 = *pos++. A file whose final frame ends mid-command therefore reads 1 to 2 bytes past the end of the buffer. The if ( pos >= data_end ) check only runs after the loop has already walked off the end. A second, broader unbounded scan exists in run_dac(), which looks ahead with while ( (cmd = *p++) != 0 ) and no data_end bound at all. When the final frame contains a DAC write (YM2612 register 0x2A on port 0) and no 0x00 follows before the end of the allocation, it can walk arbitrarily far past the buffer, stopping on whatever zero byte adjacent heap memory supplies. This second path is confirmed by reading the source at master and 0.6.5, but is not exercised by the supplied proof-of-concept files. Reachability: both paths run from gme_start_track() as soon as playback begins (Music_Emu::start_track() -> ... -> Gym_Emu::play_frame() -> parse_frame()). The file only needs the 428-byte GYMX header for gme_identify_header() to route it to Gym_Emu. FFmpeg's libavformat/libgme.c and VLC's modules/demux/gme.c both hand attacker-supplied bytes to this path. The metadata (track length) path is not affected. Title
[NotCVE-2026-0016] game-music-emu VGM Command Interpreter Unvalidated 0xE0 PCM Seek Offset Allows Out-of-Bounds Read and Denial of Service
Summary
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- NotCVE Advisory — NotCVE-2026-0016 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- [-] Summary: An out-of-bounds read in the VGM command interpreter of game-music-emu (libgme), the open-source video game music emulation library, allows an attacker who supplies a crafted .vgm or .vgz file to crash the hosting process or to have adjacent heap memory influence the rendered audio, via a PCM seek command whose offset is never validated. CVSS:3.1 7.1 (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:N/A:H). [-] Affected: game-music-emu (libgme) through 0.6.5, and master as of commit fe8da4b. Default builds; no fixed version is verified. [-] Technical Description: Vgm_Emu_Impl::run_commands() in gme/Vgm_Emu_Impl.cpp handles VGM command 0xE0 (cmd_pcm_seek) by building an interior pointer straight from file content: case cmd_pcm_seek: pcm_pos = pcm_data + pos [3] * 0x1000000L + pos [2] * 0x10000L + pos [1] * 0x100L + pos [0]; pos += 4; break; pcm_data points into the decompressed file buffer, set by a preceding 0x67 (cmd_data_block) command. The 32-bit little-endian operand is attacker-controlled and is compared neither against the declared data-block size nor against data_end, so pcm_pos can be placed up to 4 GiB past the end of the allocation. The following 0x80-0x8F (cmd_pcm_delay) case then executes write_pcm( vgm_time, *pcm_pos++ ), dereferencing the pointer without a bounds check of its own. The reporter's AddressSanitizer log records a SEGV on a read at Vgm_Emu_Impl.cpp:255 in run_commands(). When the computed address is unmapped the read faults and the process terminates; when it is mapped, the byte read becomes part of the decoded audio, so memory adjacent to the file buffer can influence attacker-observable output. Reachability: the VGM emulator is part of the default build, and the command stream runs during gme_start_track(), on the file-open path. VLC's modules/demux/gme.c calls gme_start_track() from its demuxer Open function, and FFmpeg links the library when built with --enable-libgme. No authentication, privileges or configuration change are needed; the file only has to reach a libgme consumer. Upstream issue #165 reports a related but different overread in the same function (unchecked command argument bytes); it is not this defect. Weaknesses: CWE-823: Use of Out-of-range Pointer Offset CWE-125: Out-of-bounds Read CAPEC-540: Overread Buffers CAPEC-129: Pointer Manipulation [-] Credit: Discovered by netspacer1124 (https://github.com/netspacer1124). Summary
Hi! We're sharing our latest advisory with you and like to thank everyone who contributed in finding and solving those vulnerabilities. This advisory will also be published at https://documentation.open-xchange.com/dovecot/security/advisories/html/2026/oxdc-adv-2026-0003.html --- Classification: TLP:GREEN Internal reference: DOV-8476 Type: CWE-403 (Exposure of File Descriptor to Unintended Control Sphere ('File Descriptor Leak')) Component: core Report confidence: Confirmed Solution status: Fixed by vendor Affected versions: OX Dovecot Pro core >=2.3.0 <2.3.22.2, OX Dovecot Pro core >=3.0.0 <3.0.7, OX Dovecot Pro core =3.1.0 <3.1.6, OX Dovecot CE core >=2.3.0 <2.4.5 First fixed revision: OX Dovecot Pro core 3.0.7, OX Dovecot Pro core 2.3.22.2, OX Dovecot Pro core 3.1.6, OX Dovecot CE core 2.4.5 Discovery date: 2025-11-25 Solution date: 2026-08-26 Disclosure date: 2026-08-26 CVE: CVE-2026-33263 CVSS: 4.3 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L) Details: submission-login: Panic when mail_max_userip_connections is reached: Panic: epoll_ctl(del, 8) failed: Bad file descriptor. When mail_max_userip_connections is set (defaul t 10) and reached, submission-login can crash with epoll() panic caused by file descriptor handling issues. Risk: If running in high-security mode (default for community releases), only the new submission connection gets terminated. If running in high-performance mode (default for Pr o releases), all connections handled by the submission-login process will be terminated. The crashes can cause failure for user to send a message, or it can cause duplica te messages to be sent. If TLS is not used (in the backend server processing the submission), duplicate deliveries cannot happen, because the crash can only happen at AUT H stage. No publicly available exploits are known. Solution: Limit the number of connections handled by single submission-login process. This has a performance impact though. Update to non-vulnerable version. --- Internal reference: DOV-8874 Type: CWE-400 (Uncontrolled Resource Consumption) Component: core Report confidence: Confirmed Solution status: Fixed by vendor Affected versions: OX Dovecot Pro core >=2.3.0 <3.0.7, OX Dovecot Pro core >=3.1.0 <3.1.6, OX Dovecot CE core >=2.3.0 <2.4.5 First fixed revision: OX Dovecot Pro core 3.0.7, OX Dovecot Pro core 3.1.6, OX Dovecot CE core 2.4.5 Discovery date: 2026-03-11 Solution date: 2026-08-26 Disclosure date: 2026-08-26 Researcher credits: ylwango613@yeswehack CVE: CVE-2026-33607 CVSS: 4.3 (CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:L) Details: Dovecot IMAP LIST match_sub() Exponential Backtracking — CPU Denial of Service. Mail content stored by a user can be crafted so that it is interpreted as dsync protocol commands when an administ rator later runs dsync with the stream protocol, for example during a migration. Risk: Injected commands can modify mailbox state on the destination during migration or replication, including internal mailbox attributes that a user should not be able to set directly. It can also cause dsync errors. No publicly available exploits are known. Solution: Avoid running dsync with the stream protocol on mailboxes with untrusted content. An attacker that can get Dovecot to relay a message, for example through Sieve redirect or submission relay, can use a crafted line ending in the message body to bypass the outbound protection that prevents message content from being interpreted as SMTP commands. Risk: A downstream mail server that hasn't yet fixed the SMTP smuggling vulnerability can be tricked into treating part of the message body as new SMTP commands, allowing injec tion of spoofed email. This is the same vulnerability class as CVE-2023-51764 and CVE-2023-51766. No publicly available exploits are known. Solution: Where you control the receiving mail servers, ensure they reject bare carriage returns in message data. An attacker that can send mail to a user can craft a message header that makes the IMAP THREAD command consume CPU disproportionate to the size of the message. Risk: When a mail client issues a THREAD command on the affected mailbox, this can cause degradation or denial of service for IMAP. No publicly available exploits are known. Solution: Monitor system for abnormal CPU usage, kill the offending process and remove the offending message from the affected mailbox. An attacker that has valid credentials can submit a Sieve script containing an extreme numeric literal, which causes an out-of-bounds write when the ManageSieve service compiles the script. Risk: This causes memory corruption and an observed crash of the ManageSieve process, resulting in denial of service for script management. This might be able to be used for re mote code execution. No publicly available exploits are known. Solution: Disable the ManageSieve service if users do not need remote Sieve script management. An unauthenticated attacker can crash the ManageSieve login process by sending a small malformed command before authenticating. Risk: If running in high-security mode (default for community releases), only the attacker's own connection is terminated. If running in high-performance mode (default for Pro releases), all connections handled by the same managesieve-login process are terminated. Repeating the attack can cause denial of service for Sieve script management. No publicly available exploits are known. Solution: Restrict network access to the ManageSieve service to trusted clients. CVE-2025-68431 (GCVE-0-2025-68431)

Title
libheif has Potential Heap Buffer Over-Read
Summary
libheif is an HEIF and AVIF file format decoder and encoder. Prior to version 1.21.0, a crafted HEIF that exercises the overlay image item path triggers a heap buffer over-read in `HeifPixelImage::overlay()`. The function computes a negative row length (likely from an unclipped overlay rectangle or invalid offsets), which then underflows when converted to `size_t` and is passed to `memcpy`, causing a very large read past the end of the source plane and a crash. Version 1.21.0 contains a patch. As a workaround, avoid decoding images using `iovl` overlay boxes.

Mitigation MIT-5
Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Assume all input is malicious. Use an "accept known good" input validation strategy, i.e., use a list of acceptable inputs that strictly conform to specifications. Reject any input that does not strictly conform to specifications, or transform it into something that does.
  • When performing input validation, consider all potentially relevant properties, including length, type of input, the full range of acceptable values, missing or extra inputs, syntax, consistency across related fields, and conformance to business rules. As an example of business rule logic, "boat" may be syntactically valid because it only contains alphanumeric characters, but it is not valid if the input is only expected to contain colors such as "red" or "blue."
  • Do not rely exclusively on looking for malicious or malformed inputs. This is likely to miss at least one undesirable input, especially if the code's environment changes. This can give attackers enough room to bypass the intended validation. However, denylists can be useful for detecting potential attacks or determining which inputs are so malformed that they should be rejected outright.
  • To reduce the likelihood of introducing an out-of-bounds read, ensure that you validate and ensure correct calculations for any length argument, buffer size calculation, or offset. Be especially careful of relying on a sentinel (i.e. special character such as NUL) in untrusted inputs.
Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Use a language that provides appropriate memory abstractions.

CAPEC-540: Overread Buffers

An adversary attacks a target by providing input that causes an application to read beyond the boundary of a defined buffer. This typically occurs when a value influencing where to start or stop reading is set to reflect positions outside of the valid memory location of the buffer. This type of attack may result in exposure of sensitive information, a system crash, or arbitrary code execution.
