Summary
Multiple OpenSSL vulnerabilities affect Festo AX OS in CEPE
Notes
Summary: Festo AX OS versions 25.0.1.46 and 25.9.2.4, which are based on PLCnext by Phoenix Contact, used by the Festo product CEPE are affected by multiple OpenSSL vulnerabilities. The vulnerabilities are identified as CVE-2025-15467 and CVE-2025-69419. Attacks may be possible when maliciously crafted firmware, key files, PKCS#12 files, CMS/PKCS#7 content, or digitally signed objects are uploaded and processed by the affected system. In the device context, exploitation typically requires a logged-in user with high privileges or the processing of attacker-supplied cryptographic objects.
Impact: A successful attack using manipulated firmware, key files, PKCS#12 files, CMS/PKCS#7 content, or digitally signed objects may lead to memory corruption, application crash, or denial of service. Depending on the affected code path, execution context, platform protections, and toolchain mitigations, execution of malicious code may be possible. This can jeopardize confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected system.
Remediation: Festo recommends updating affected CEPE installations running Festo AX OS 25.0.1.46 or Festo AX OS 25.9.2.4 to Festo AX OS 26.3.1.4 or later as soon as the fixed version becomes available.
General recommendations: As part of a security strategy, Festo recommends the following general defense measures to reduce the risk of exploits: - Use controllers and devices only in a protected environment to minimize network exposure and ensure that they are not accessible from outside. - Use firewalls to protect and separate the control system network from other networks. - Use VPN (Virtual Private Networks) tunnels if remote access is required. - Activate and apply user management and password features. - Use encrypted communication links. - Limit the access to both development and control system by physical means, operating system features, etc. - Protect both development and control systems by using up-to-date virus detection solutions. Festo strongly recommends minimizing and protecting network access to connected devices with state-of-the-art techniques and processes. To ensure secure operation follow the recommendations in the product manuals.

Parsing CMS AuthEnvelopedData or EnvelopedData message with maliciously crafted AEAD parameters can trigger a stack buffer overflow. Impact summary: A stack buffer overflow may lead to a crash, causing Denial of Service, or potentially remote code execution. When parsing CMS (Auth)EnvelopedData structures that use AEAD ciphers such as AES-GCM, the IV (Initialization Vector) encoded in the ASN.1 parameters is copied into a fixed-size stack buffer without verifying that its length fits the destination. An attacker can supply a crafted CMS message with an oversized IV, causing a stack-based out-of-bounds write before any authentication or tag verification occurs. Applications and services that parse untrusted CMS or PKCS#7 content using AEAD ciphers (e.g., S/MIME (Auth)EnvelopedData with AES-GCM) are vulnerable. Because the overflow occurs prior to authentication, no valid key material is required to trigger it. While exploitability to remote code execution depends on platform and toolchain mitigations, the stack-based write primitive represents a severe risk. The FIPS modules in 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 and 3.0 are not affected by this issue, as the CMS implementation is outside the OpenSSL FIPS module boundary. OpenSSL 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 and 3.0 are vulnerable to this issue. OpenSSL 1.1.1 and 1.0.2 are not affected by this issue.

Calling PKCS12_get_friendlyname() function on a maliciously crafted PKCS#12 file with a BMPString (UTF-16BE) friendly name containing non-ASCII BMP code point can trigger a one byte write before the allocated buffer. Impact summary: The out-of-bounds write can cause a memory corruption which can have various consequences including a Denial of Service. The OPENSSL_uni2utf8() function performs a two-pass conversion of a PKCS#12 BMPString (UTF-16BE) to UTF-8. In the second pass, when emitting UTF-8 bytes, the helper function bmp_to_utf8() incorrectly forwards the remaining UTF-16 source byte count as the destination buffer capacity to UTF8_putc(). For BMP code points above U+07FF, UTF-8 requires three bytes, but the forwarded capacity can be just two bytes. UTF8_putc() then returns -1, and this negative value is added to the output length without validation, causing the length to become negative. The subsequent trailing NUL byte is then written at a negative offset, causing write outside of heap allocated buffer. The vulnerability is reachable via the public PKCS12_get_friendlyname() API when parsing attacker-controlled PKCS#12 files. While PKCS12_parse() uses a different code path that avoids this issue, PKCS12_get_friendlyname() directly invokes the vulnerable function. Exploitation requires an attacker to provide a malicious PKCS#12 file to be parsed by the application and the attacker can just trigger a one zero byte write before the allocated buffer. For that reason the issue was assessed as Low severity according to our Security Policy. The FIPS modules in 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 and 3.0 are not affected by this issue, as the PKCS#12 implementation is outside the OpenSSL FIPS module boundary. OpenSSL 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3, 3.0 and 1.1.1 are vulnerable to this issue. OpenSSL 1.0.2 is not affected by this issue.

"text": "Calling PKCS12_get_friendlyname() function on a maliciously crafted PKCS#12 file with a BMPString (UTF-16BE) friendly name containing non-ASCII BMP code point can trigger a one byte write before the allocated buffer.\n\nImpact summary: The out-of-bounds write can cause a memory corruption which can have various consequences including a Denial of Service.\n\nThe OPENSSL_uni2utf8() function performs a two-pass conversion of a PKCS#12 BMPString (UTF-16BE) to UTF-8. The subsequent trailing NUL byte is then written at a negative offset, causing write outside of heap allocated buffer.\n\nThe vulnerability is reachable via the public PKCS12_get_friendlyname() API when parsing attacker-controlled PKCS#12 files. For that reason the issue was assessed as Low severity according to our Security Policy.\n\nThe FIPS modules in 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3 and 3.0 are not affected by this issue, as the PKCS#12 implementation is outside the OpenSSL FIPS module boundary.\n\nOpenSSL 3.6, 3.5, 3.4, 3.3, 3.0 and 1.1.1 are vulnerable to this issue.\n\nOpenSSL 1.0.2 is not affected by this issue.",
