Summary
The implementation of PEAP in wpa_supplicant through 2.10 allows authentication bypass. For a successful attack, wpa_supplicant must be configured to not verify the network's TLS certificate during Phase 1 authentication, and an eap_peap_decrypt vulnerability can then be abused to skip Phase 2 authentication. The attack vector is sending an EAP-TLV Success packet instead of starting Phase 2. This allows an adversary to impersonate Enterprise Wi-Fi networks.

Severity ?
Details
The implementation of PEAP in wpa_supplicant through 2.10 allows authentication bypass. For a successful attack, wpa_supplicant must be configured to not verify the network's TLS certificate during Phase 1 authentication, and an eap_peap_decrypt vulnerability can then be abused to skip Phase 2 authentication. The attack vector is sending an EAP-TLV Success packet instead of starting Phase 2. This allows an adversary to impersonate Enterprise Wi-Fi networks.

Summary
Red Hat Security Advisory: wpa_supplicant security update
Notes
Topic
An update for wpa_supplicant is now available for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.
Red Hat Product Security has rated this update as having a security impact of Moderate. A Common Vulnerability Scoring System (CVSS) base score, which gives a detailed severity rating, is available for each vulnerability from the CVE link(s) in the References section.
Details
The wpa_supplicant packages contain an 802.1X Supplicant with support for WEP, WPA, WPA2 (IEEE 802.11i / RSN), and various EAP authentication methods. They implement key negotiation with a WPA Authenticator for client stations and controls the roaming and IEEE 802.11 authentication and association of the WLAN driver.
Security Fix(es):
* wpa_supplicant: potential authorization bypass (CVE-2023-52160)
For more details about the security issue(s), including the impact, a CVSS score, acknowledgments, and other related information, refer to the CVE page(s) listed in the References section.
Additional Changes:
For detailed information on changes in this release, see the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9.4 Release Notes linked from the References section.

Firstly, the attack requires specific prerequisites, including knowledge of the target SSID and the misconfiguration of wpa_supplicant on the victim\u0027s device, which somewhat limits its widespread exploitation. Additionally, the attack vector primarily targets Enterprise networks relying on PEAP authentication, narrowing its impact compared to more widely used authentication methods.
Security Fix(es):
* wpa_supplicant: potential authorization bypass (CVE-2023-52160)

Security Fix(es):
* wpa_supplicant: potential authorization bypass (CVE-2023-52160)

Additionally, the attack vector primarily targets Enterprise networks relying on PEAP authentication, narrowing its impact compared to more widely used authentication methods. Produktbeschreibung
wpa_supplicant ist eine freie Software Implementation eines IEEE 802.11i "supplicant" für Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD und Microsoft Windows. wpa_supplicant unterstützt "WPA-Personal" (WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK), "WPA-Enterprise" (WPA mit EAP z. B. mit einem RADIUS Authentisierungs-Server) und andere Wireless LAN Sicherheitsprotokolle.
Angriff

Betroffene Betriebssysteme
- Android
- iPhoneOS
- Linux
- MacOS X
- Windows
