CWE-1285

Allowed

Improper Validation of Specified Index, Position, or Offset in Input

Abstraction: Base · Status: Incomplete

The product receives input that is expected to specify an index, position, or offset into an indexable resource such as a buffer or file, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the specified index/position/offset has the required properties.

104 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Title
Softros LAN Messenger 9.2 Denial of Service via Log Files Location
Summary
Softros LAN Messenger 9.2 contains a denial of service vulnerability that allows local attackers to crash the application by supplying an excessively long string to the custom log files location field. Attackers can input a buffer of 2000 characters in the Log Files Location custom path parameter to trigger a crash when the OK button is clicked.

Summary
ASA-2024-002: Default `PrepareProposalHandler` may produce invalid proposals when used with default `SenderNonceMempool`
Details

ASA-2024-002: Default PrepareProposalHandler may produce invalid proposals when used with default SenderNonceMempool

Component: Cosmos SDK Criticality: Medium Affected Versions: Cosmos SDK versions <= 0.50.3; <= 0.47.8 Affected Users: Chain developers, Validator and Node operators Impact: Denial of Service

Summary

When using the default PrepareProposalHandler and the default SenderNonceMempool, an issue was identified which may allow invalid blocks to be proposed when a single sender includes multiple transactions with non-sequential sequence numbers in certain conditions. If this state is reached, it can lead to a reduction in block production for a network.

Next Steps for Impacted Parties

If you are a chain developer on an affected version of the Cosmos SDK, it is advised to update to the latest available version of the Cosmos SDK for your project. Once a patched version is available, it is recommended that network operators upgrade.

A Github Security Advisory for this issue is available in the Cosmos-SDK repository. For more information about Cosmos SDK, see https://docs.cosmos.network/.

This issue was found by KonradStaniec, gitferry, SebastianElvis, and vitsalis who reported it to the Cosmos Bug Bounty Program on HackerOne on January 16, 2024. If you believe you have found a bug in the Interchain Stack or would like to contribute to the program by reporting a bug, please see https://hackerone.com/cosmos.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-04-20 15:31 – Updated: 2026-04-24 15:29
VLAI
Summary
Apache Kafka does not validate JWT tokens in its OAUTHBEARER authentication implementation
Details

A security vulnerability has been identified in Apache Kafka. By default, the broker property sasl.oauthbearer.jwt.validator.class is set to org.apache.kafka.common.security.oauthbearer.DefaultJwtValidator. It accepts any JWT token without validating its signature, issuer, or audience. An attacker can generate a JWT token from any issuer with the preferred_username set to any user, and the broker will accept it.

Apache advises Kafka users using kafka v4.1.0 or v4.1.1 to set the config sasl.oauthbearer.jwt.validator.class to org.apache.kafka.common.security.oauthbearer.BrokerJwtValidator explicitly to avoid this vulnerability. Since Kafka v4.1.2 and v4.2.0 and later, the issue is fixed and will correctly validate the JWT token.

Details

In MAE, there is a possible out of bounds write due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to local escalation of privilege if a malicious actor has already obtained the System privilege. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: ALPS10431968; Issue ID: MSV-5824.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2023-07-14 21:31 – Updated: 2024-04-04 06:09
VLAI
Details

An Improper Validation of Specified Index, Position, or Offset in Input vulnerability in the Connectivity Fault Management(CFM) module of Juniper Networks Junos OS on MX Series(except MPC10, MPC11 and LC9600) allows an adjacent attacker on the local broadcast domain to cause a Denial of Service(DoS).

Upon receiving a malformed CFM packet, the MPC crashes. Continued receipt of these packets causes a sustained denial of service. This issue can only be triggered when CFM hasn't been configured.

This issue affects: Juniper Networks Junos OS All versions prior to 19.1R3-S10 on MX Series; 19.2 versions prior to 19.2R3-S7 on MX Series; 19.3 versions prior to 19.3R3-S8 on MX Series; 19.4 versions prior to 19.4R3-S12 on MX Series; 20.1 version 20.1R1 and later versions on MX Series; 20.2 versions prior to 20.2R3-S7 on MX Series; 20.3 version 20.3R1 and later versions on MX Series; 20.4 versions prior to 20.4R3-S7 on MX Series; 21.1 versions prior to 21.1R3-S5 on MX Series; 21.2 versions prior to 21.2R3-S4 on MX Series; 21.3 versions prior to 21.3R3-S4 on MX Series; 21.4 versions prior to 21.4R3-S3 on MX Series; 22.1 versions prior to 22.1R3-S2 on MX Series; 22.2 versions prior to 22.2R3 on MX Series; 22.3 versions prior to 22.3R2, 22.3R3 on MX Series; 22.4 versions prior to 22.4R2 on MX Series.

Details

jetCast Server 2.0 contains a denial of service vulnerability that allows local attackers to crash the application by supplying an excessively long string in the Log directory configuration field. Attackers can paste a buffer of 5000 characters into the Log directory input, then click Start to trigger a crash that terminates the server process.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-10-07 18:31 – Updated: 2025-10-29 18:30
VLAI
Details

The 'zipfile' module would not check the validity of the ZIP64 End of Central Directory (EOCD) Locator record offset value would not be used to locate the ZIP64 EOCD record, instead the ZIP64 EOCD record would be assumed to be the previous record in the ZIP archive. This could be abused to create ZIP archives that are handled differently by the 'zipfile' module compared to other ZIP implementations.

Remediation maintains this behavior, but checks that the offset specified in the ZIP64 EOCD Locator record matches the expected value.

Mitigation MIT-5
Implementation

Strategy: Input Validation

  • Assume all input is malicious. Use an "accept known good" input validation strategy, i.e., use a list of acceptable inputs that strictly conform to specifications. Reject any input that does not strictly conform to specifications, or transform it into something that does.
  • When performing input validation, consider all potentially relevant properties, including length, type of input, the full range of acceptable values, missing or extra inputs, syntax, consistency across related fields, and conformance to business rules. As an example of business rule logic, "boat" may be syntactically valid because it only contains alphanumeric characters, but it is not valid if the input is only expected to contain colors such as "red" or "blue."
  • Do not rely exclusively on looking for malicious or malformed inputs. This is likely to miss at least one undesirable input, especially if the code's environment changes. This can give attackers enough room to bypass the intended validation. However, denylists can be useful for detecting potential attacks or determining which inputs are so malformed that they should be rejected outright.
