CVE-2020-1896 (GCVE-0-2020-1896)

Vulnerability from cvelistv5 – Published: 2021-02-02 06:50 – Updated: 2024-08-04 06:53
VLAI
Summary
A stack overflow vulnerability in Facebook Hermes 'builtin apply' prior to commit 86543ac47e59c522976b5632b8bf9a2a4583c7d2 (https://github.com/facebook/hermes/commit/86543ac47e59c522976b5632b8bf9a2a4583c7d2) allows attackers to potentially execute arbitrary code via crafted JavaScript. Note that this is only exploitable if the application using Hermes permits evaluation of untrusted JavaScript. Hence, most React Native applications are not affected.

Title
Foscam Video Management System 1.1.6.6 Buffer Overflow Denial of Service
Summary
Foscam Video Management System 1.1.6.6 contains a buffer overflow vulnerability in the UID field that allows local attackers to crash the application by supplying an excessively long string. Attackers can input a 5000-character buffer into the UID parameter during device addition to trigger an application crash when the Login Check function is invoked.

Title
Sricam DeviceViewer 3.12.0.1 Local Buffer Overflow DEP Bypass
Summary
Sricam DeviceViewer 3.12.0.1 contains a local buffer overflow vulnerability in the user management add user function that allows authenticated attackers to execute arbitrary code by bypassing data execution prevention. Attackers can inject a malicious payload through the Username field in User Management to trigger a stack-based buffer overflow and execute commands via ROP chain gadgets.

Mitigation MIT-10
Operation Build and Compilation

Strategy: Environment Hardening

  • Use automatic buffer overflow detection mechanisms that are offered by certain compilers or compiler extensions. Examples include: the Microsoft Visual Studio /GS flag, Fedora/Red Hat FORTIFY_SOURCE GCC flag, StackGuard, and ProPolice, which provide various mechanisms including canary-based detection and range/index checking.
  • D3-SFCV (Stack Frame Canary Validation) from D3FEND [REF-1334] discusses canary-based detection in detail.
Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Use an abstraction library to abstract away risky APIs. Not a complete solution.

Mitigation
Implementation

Implement and perform bounds checking on input.

Mitigation
Implementation

Do not use dangerous functions such as gets. Use safer, equivalent functions which check for boundary errors.

Strategy: Environment Hardening

  • Run or compile the software using features or extensions that randomly arrange the positions of a program's executable and libraries in memory. Because this makes the addresses unpredictable, it can prevent an attacker from reliably jumping to exploitable code.
  • Examples include Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR) [REF-58] [REF-60] and Position-Independent Executables (PIE) [REF-64]. Imported modules may be similarly realigned if their default memory addresses conflict with other modules, in a process known as "rebasing" (for Windows) and "prelinking" (for Linux) [REF-1332] using randomly generated addresses. ASLR for libraries cannot be used in conjunction with prelink since it would require relocating the libraries at run-time, defeating the whole purpose of prelinking.
  • For more information on these techniques see D3-SAOR (Segment Address Offset Randomization) from D3FEND [REF-1335].
