This leads
to UAF issues during subsequent accesses. Here's an example of reproduction
steps:
1. With /dev/fb0 already registered in the system, load a kernel module
to register a new device /dev/fb1;
2. Set fb1's mode to the global fb_display[] array (via FBIOPUT_CON2FBMAP);
3. Switch console from fb to VGA (to allow normal rmmod of the ko);
4. Unload the kernel module, at this point fb1's modelist is freed, leaving
a wild pointer in fb_display[];
5. Trigger the bug via system calls through fb0 attempting to delete a mode
from fb0.

Add a check in do_unregister_framebuffer(): if the mode to be freed exists
in fb_display[], set the corresponding mode pointer to NULL.
AV:L - The vulnerability is reached through `ioctl()` on the `/dev/fbN` character device (`FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO` / `FBIOPUT_CON2FBMAP`), which requires local access to the system. There is no remote or network-facing path into fbcon.
AC:L - Once a framebuffer has been unregistered leaving a stale `fb_display[i].mode`, triggering the use-after-free is a single deterministic ioctl with no race to win and no memory-layout condition outside the attacker's control. The attacker can additionally groom the freed `fb_modelist` slab with controlled allocations before dereferencing it.
PR:L - No capability check exists anywhere in the fbdev ioctl path — access is governed solely by DAC on `/dev/fbN`, which logged-in seat users obtain via logind `uaccess` ACLs or `video`/`graphics` group membership on desktops, kiosks, embedded devices and Android. An unprivileged local user with a console/seat can issue every ioctl involved.
UI:N - The attacker performs all steps himself via ioctls on the framebuffer device; no victim action is needed. The framebuffer unregistration that creates the stale pointer occurs through ordinary system events such as USB display/dock removal or DRM driver unbind.
S:U - The corruption and its consequences are confined to kernel memory within the same security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - The use-after-free reads a freed slab object that the attacker can reallocate with chosen or sensitive kernel data, and `display_to_var()`/`fb_videomode_to_var()` copy ~15 fields out of it into `info->var`, which is then readable from userspace via `FBIOGET_VSCREENINFO` — a repeatable kernel heap disclosure primitive.
I:H - A use-after-free on a groomable kmalloc object permits heap spraying and type confusion with the reallocated victim object; the freed contents also propagate into `fb_check_var`/`fb_set_par` and console resize arithmetic, corrupting kernel state and enabling escalation to control-flow hijack.
A:H - The reported syzkaller report is a KASAN slab-use-after-free that oopses the task in `fb_mode_is_equal()`; dereferencing the dangling pointer after the slab page is returned to the page allocator produces a kernel panic, and the stale pointer can be re-triggered repeatedly.
AV:N - The vulnerable parser processes Ceph messenger v2 AUTH_DONE frames received over TCP from a remote Ceph monitor/OSD/MDS peer. A malicious or compromised network peer can supply the crafted frame during the connection/authentication handshake.
AC:L - The attacker controls the frame tag, control-segment length, payload_len, and payload contents needed to reach the unchecked callout. No race or hard-to-influence system state is required.
PR:N - The bug is reached before the peer has been authenticated by the client-side msgr2 handshake. The remote attacker does not need privileges on the victim system.
UI:N - In a reasonable Ceph deployment, clients connect or reconnect to monitors, OSDs, and MDS daemons automatically as part of mounted filesystem or block-device operation. A malicious reachable peer can trigger the malformed AUTH_DONE response without further victim interaction.
S:U - The impact is within the kernel/libceph client security authority on the same host. This does not cross a VM, IOMMU, or other separate security scope boundary.
C:H - The missing bounds check lets a peer-controlled payload_len make auth callbacks treat memory beyond the received control buffer as valid input. This is an unbounded kernel out-of-bounds read, so confidentiality impact is High.
I:H - Although described as an out-of-bounds read, the auth_x callbacks can decrypt and clear claimed reply data in place based on attacker-controlled lengths. With the required conservative scoring, this can plausibly become kernel memory corruption and is scored as High integrity impact.
A:H - Reading or cryptographically processing beyond the allocated control buffer can fault, corrupt memory, or otherwise crash the kernel. The malformed handshake frame can be sent repeatedly by the malicious peer.
AV:N - The vulnerable assertion is reached while processing a Ceph OSD map delivered over the Ceph network protocol from a monitor or OSD connection. A remote malicious or compromised Ceph peer can supply the malformed incremental map.
AC:L - The trigger is a straightforward epoch mismatch inside an otherwise accepted incremental OSD map. No race, timing window, or hard-to-control memory layout is required.
PR:N - The attacker does not need privileges on the vulnerable Linux client; the relevant gate is being the network peer that sends the Ceph map. Ceph authentication/fsid checks may restrict which peers are trusted, but in the highest reasonable scenario a malicious or compromised cluster peer can send the map without local target privileges.
UI:N - Once the client is connected and subscribed to OSD map updates, the peer can send the malformed map without any further victim action. The crash is caused by network message processing in the kernel worker path.
S:U - The impact is a crash of the vulnerable kernel/client system itself. It does not cross into a separate security authority such as guest-to-host or IOMMU escape.
C:N - The bug is an overzealous BUG_ON on an epoch consistency check. It does not expose memory or create a read primitive.
I:N - The fix only changes a fatal assertion into invalid-map handling. There is no memory corruption, arbitrary write, or data modification primitive.
A:H - The vulnerable code executes BUG_ON when the crafted epoch differs from map->epoch + 1. That can panic/oops the kernel, causing high availability impact."

The OSD client tracks the progress of a
sparse-read reply using a separate state machine, largely independent of
the messenger's state.

If a connection is lost mid-payload or the sparse-read state machine
returns an error, the sparse-read state is not reset. The OSD client
will then interpret the beginning of a new reply as the continuation of
the old one. If this makes the sparse-read machinery enter a failure
state, it may never recover, producing loops like:

libceph: [0] got 0 extents
libceph: data len 142248331 != extent len 0
libceph: osd0 (1)...:6801 socket error on read
libceph: data len 142248331 != extent len 0
libceph: osd0 (1)...:6801 socket error on read

Therefore, reset the sparse-read state in osd_fault(), ensuring retries
start from a clean state.
AV:N - The Ceph OSD client communicates with OSD servers over TCP. A network-level attacker who can disrupt the TCP connection (RST injection) or a malicious/compromised OSD server can trigger the fault during a sparse read operation remotely.
AC:L - Sparse reads are a normal part of CephFS/RBD operation. An attacker who can disrupt TCP connections can repeatedly do so until one coincides with a sparse read. A malicious OSD server knows exactly when sparse reads are in progress and can reliably trigger the fault.
PR:N - The attack requires disrupting the TCP connection between client and OSD, which does not require any Ceph authentication credentials. TCP RST injection or network-level connection disruption bypasses CephX authentication entirely.
UI:N - No user interaction is required. The sparse read operations occur as part of normal CephFS/RBD I/O, and the connection fault is triggered by the attacker without any victim action.
S:U - The impact is confined to the kernel's Ceph client losing access to the OSD. There is no cross-boundary impact such as VM escape or sandbox escape.
C:N - The vulnerability causes a data parsing mismatch that is caught by validation checks, returning clean errors. No information disclosure occurs — the stale state causes misinterpretation of reply framing, not exposure of memory contents.
I:N - No data modification or memory corruption occurs. The validation checks in the sparse read state machine detect the mismatch and return -EREMOTEIO before any data is written to incorrect locations.
A:H - The OSD connection enters an infinite, unrecoverable error loop where every retry fails with the same stale state mismatch. All CephFS/RBD I/O to the affected OSD hangs or fails indefinitely, causing persistent denial of service."

Related by attack behaviour
Vulnerabilities whose description is nearest to this one in the vector space of the CIRCL/vulnerability-attack-technique-biencoder model. This is a similarity search over the bi-encoder space (plain cosine), not a classification, and it has no measured accuracy.
