Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

bcachefs: grab s_umount only if snapshotting

When I was testing mongodb over bcachefs with compression, there is a lockdep warning when snapshotting mongodb data volume.

$ cat test.sh prog=bcachefs

$prog subvolume create /mnt/data $prog subvolume create /mnt/data/snapshots

while true;do $prog subvolume snapshot /mnt/data /mnt/data/snapshots/$(date +%s) sleep 1s done

$ cat /etc/mongodb.conf systemLog: destination: file logAppend: true path: /mnt/data/mongod.log

storage: dbPath: /mnt/data/

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

bpf: Fix deadlock between rcu_tasks_trace and event_mutex.

Fix the following deadlock: CPU A _free_event() perf_kprobe_destroy() mutex_lock(&event_mutex) perf_trace_event_unreg() synchronize_rcu_tasks_trace()

There are several paths where _free_event() grabs event_mutex and calls sync_rcu_tasks_trace. Above is one such case.

CPU B bpf_prog_test_run_syscall() rcu_read_lock_trace() bpf_prog_run_pin_on_cpu() bpf_prog_load() bpf_tracing_func_proto() trace_set_clr_event() mutex_lock(&event_mutex)

Delegate trace_set_clr_event() to workqueue to avoid such lock dependency.

Details

[This CNA information record relates to multiple CVEs; the text explains which aspects/vulnerabilities correspond to which CVE.]

To create and manage guests, domctl operations are used by the control domain, a possible Xenstore domain, or by a domain controlling a particular guest. Some of these operations may not be executed in parallel, so a system-wide lock is used. The way that lock is acquired is, however, not providing any fairness. This is CVE-2026-42489.

Furthermore, with XSM/Flask in use, the lock acquire will, for some operations, occur ahead of any permission checking. This is CVE-2026-42490.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

RDMA/hns: Fix soft lockup during bt pages loop

Driver runs a for-loop when allocating bt pages and mapping them with buffer pages. When a large buffer (e.g. MR over 100GB) is being allocated, it may require a considerable loop count. This will lead to soft lockup:

Add a cond_resched() to fix soft lockup during these loops. In order not to affect the allocation performance of normal-size buffer, set the loop count of a 100GB MR as the threshold to call cond_resched().

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

IB/core: Fix a nested dead lock as part of ODP flow

Fix a nested dead lock as part of ODP flow by using mmput_async().

From the below call trace [1] can see that calling mmput() once we have the umem_odp->umem_mutex locked as required by ib_umem_odp_map_dma_and_lock() might trigger in the same task the exit_mmap()->__mmu_notifier_release()->mlx5_ib_invalidate_range() which may dead lock when trying to lock the same mutex.

Moving to use mmput_async() will solve the problem as the above exit_mmap() flow will be called in other task and will be executed once the lock will be available.

GHSA-C3J4-C39C-W5R2

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-09-05 18:31 – Updated: 2026-05-12 15:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

smb/server: avoid deadlock when linking with ReplaceIfExists

If smb2_create_link() is called with ReplaceIfExists set and the name does exist then a deadlock will happen.

ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_locked() will return with success and the parent directory will be locked. ksmbd_vfs_remove_file() will then remove the file. ksmbd_vfs_link() will then be called while the parent is still locked. It will try to lock the same parent and will deadlock.

This patch moves the ksmbd_vfs_kern_path_unlock() call to before ksmbd_vfs_link() and then simplifies the code, removing the file_present flag variable.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-01-14 15:33 – Updated: 2026-03-25 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

block: Remove queue freezing from several sysfs store callbacks

Freezing the request queue from inside sysfs store callbacks may cause a deadlock in combination with the dm-multipath driver and the queue_if_no_path option. Additionally, freezing the request queue slows down system boot on systems where sysfs attributes are set synchronously.

Fix this by removing the blk_mq_freeze_queue() / blk_mq_unfreeze_queue() calls from the store callbacks that do not strictly need these callbacks. Add the __data_racy annotation to request_queue.rq_timeout to suppress KCSAN data race reports about the rq_timeout reads.

This patch may cause a small delay in applying the new settings.

For all the attributes affected by this patch, I/O will complete correctly whether the old or the new value of the attribute is used.

This patch affects the following sysfs attributes: * io_poll_delay * io_timeout * nomerges * read_ahead_kb * rq_affinity

Here is an example of a deadlock triggered by running test srp/002 if this patch is not applied:

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-09-15 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-24 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

md/raid10: prevent soft lockup while flush writes

Currently, there is no limit for raid1/raid10 plugged bio. While flushing writes, raid1 has cond_resched() while raid10 doesn't, and too many writes can cause soft lockup.

Follow up soft lockup can be triggered easily with writeback test for raid10 with ramdisks:

watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#10 stuck for 27s! [md0_raid10:1293] Call Trace: call_rcu+0x16/0x20 put_object+0x41/0x80 __delete_object+0x50/0x90 delete_object_full+0x2b/0x40 kmemleak_free+0x46/0xa0 slab_free_freelist_hook.constprop.0+0xed/0x1a0 kmem_cache_free+0xfd/0x300 mempool_free_slab+0x1f/0x30 mempool_free+0x3a/0x100 bio_free+0x59/0x80 bio_put+0xcf/0x2c0 free_r10bio+0xbf/0xf0 raid_end_bio_io+0x78/0xb0 one_write_done+0x8a/0xa0 raid10_end_write_request+0x1b4/0x430 bio_endio+0x175/0x320 brd_submit_bio+0x3b9/0x9b7 [brd] __submit_bio+0x69/0xe0 submit_bio_noacct_nocheck+0x1e6/0x5a0 submit_bio_noacct+0x38c/0x7e0 flush_pending_writes+0xf0/0x240 raid10d+0xac/0x1ed0

Fix the problem by adding cond_resched() to raid10 like what raid1 did.

Note that unlimited plugged bio still need to be optimized, for example, in the case of lots of dirty pages writeback, this will take lots of memory and io will spend a long time in plug, hence io latency is bad.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks

Use industry standard APIs to implement locking mechanism.

CAPEC-25: Forced Deadlock

The adversary triggers and exploits a deadlock condition in the target software to cause a denial of service. A deadlock can occur when two or more competing actions are waiting for each other to finish, and thus neither ever does. Deadlock conditions can be difficult to detect.

CAPEC-26: Leveraging Race Conditions

The adversary targets a race condition occurring when multiple processes access and manipulate the same resource concurrently, and the outcome of the execution depends on the particular order in which the access takes place. The adversary can leverage a race condition by "running the race", modifying the resource and modifying the normal execution flow. For instance, a race condition can occur while accessing a file: the adversary can trick the system by replacing the original file with their version and cause the system to read the malicious file.

CAPEC-27: Leveraging Race Conditions via Symbolic Links

This attack leverages the use of symbolic links (Symlinks) in order to write to sensitive files. An attacker can create a Symlink link to a target file not otherwise accessible to them. When the privileged program tries to create a temporary file with the same name as the Symlink link, it will actually write to the target file pointed to by the attackers' Symlink link. If the attacker can insert malicious content in the temporary file they will be writing to the sensitive file by using the Symlink. The race occurs because the system checks if the temporary file exists, then creates the file. The attacker would typically create the Symlink during the interval between the check and the creation of the temporary file.
