Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9874 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

thermal: core: Free tzp copy along with the thermal zone

The object pointed to by tz->tzp may still be accessed after being freed in thermal_zone_device_unregister(), so move the freeing of it to the point after the removal completion has been completed at which it cannot be accessed any more.

Details

In Apache HTTP Server 2.4 releases 2.4.17 to 2.4.38, with MPM event, worker or prefork, code executing in less-privileged child processes or threads (including scripts executed by an in-process scripting interpreter) could execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the parent process (usually root) by manipulating the scoreboard. Non-Unix systems are not affected.

Use-after-free in PQC hybrid key-share handling. This is an incomplete-fix follow-up to CVE-2026-5460 (released in 5.9.1): a malicious TLS 1.3 server sending a truncated PQC hybrid KeyShare can still trigger the error cleanup path to operate on freed memory.

Details

The implementation of TIOCNOTTY failed to clear a back-pointer from the structure representing the controlling terminal to the calling process' session. If the invoking process then exits, the terminal structure may end up containing a pointer to freed memory.

A malicious process can abuse the dangling pointer to grant itself root privileges.

GHSA-W9V5-63V9-9QVJ

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-12-27 15:31 – Updated: 2025-01-14 18:31

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

ksmbd: fix use-after-free in SMB request handling

A race condition exists between SMB request handling in ksmbd_conn_handler_loop() and the freeing of ksmbd_conn in the workqueue handler handle_ksmbd_work(). This leads to a UAF. - KASAN: slab-use-after-free Read in handle_ksmbd_work - KASAN: slab-use-after-free in rtlock_slowlock_locked

This race condition arises as follows: - ksmbd_conn_handler_loop() waits for conn->r_count to reach zero: wait_event(conn->r_count_q, atomic_read(&conn->r_count) == 0); - Meanwhile, handle_ksmbd_work() decrements conn->r_count using atomic_dec_return(&conn->r_count), and if it reaches zero, calls ksmbd_conn_free(), which frees conn. - However, after handle_ksmbd_work() decrements conn->r_count, it may still access conn->r_count_q in the following line: waitqueue_active(&conn->r_count_q) or wake_up(&conn->r_count_q) This results in a UAF, as conn has already been freed.

The discovery of this UAF can be referenced in the following PR for syzkaller's support for SMB requests.

GHSA-WC22-WV2F-7F64

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-09-15 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-25 15:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

NFSD: fix use-after-free on source server when doing inter-server copy

Use-after-free occurred when the laundromat tried to free expired cpntf_state entry on the s2s_cp_stateids list after inter-server copy completed. The sc_cp_list that the expired copy state was inserted on was already freed.

When COPY completes, the Linux client normally sends LOCKU(lock_state x), FREE_STATEID(lock_state x) and CLOSE(open_state y) to the source server. The nfs4_put_stid call from nfsd4_free_stateid cleans up the copy state from the s2s_cp_stateids list before freeing the lock state's stid.

However, sometimes the CLOSE was sent before the FREE_STATEID request. When this happens, the nfsd4_close_open_stateid call from nfsd4_close frees all lock states on its st_locks list without cleaning up the copy state on the sc_cp_list list. When the time the FREE_STATEID arrives the server returns BAD_STATEID since the lock state was freed. This causes the use-after-free error to occur when the laundromat tries to free the expired cpntf_state.

This patch adds a call to nfs4_free_cpntf_statelist in nfsd4_close_open_stateid to clean up the copy state before calling free_ol_stateid_reaplist to free the lock state's stid on the reaplist.
