CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
10190 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

GHSA-9RRQ-F95G-4WMQ
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-03-06 09:30 – Updated: 2025-01-07 21:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
llc: call sock_orphan() at release time
syzbot reported an interesting trace [1] caused by a stale sk->sk_wq pointer in a closed llc socket.
In commit ff7b11aa481f ("net: socket: set sock->sk to NULL after calling proto_ops::release()") Eric Biggers hinted that some protocols are missing a sock_orphan(), we need to perform a full audit.
In net-next, I plan to clear sock->sk from sock_orphan() and amend Eric patch to add a warning.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-13 01:33 – Updated: 2022-05-13 01:33This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.2.0.9297. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the handling of the respose property of a host object. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-6509.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-13 01:24 – Updated: 2022-05-13 01:24Use-after-free vulnerability in the TypeObject class in the JavaScript engine in Mozilla Firefox before 28.0, Firefox ESR 24.x before 24.4, Thunderbird before 24.4, and SeaMonkey before 2.25 allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code by triggering extensive memory consumption while garbage collection is occurring, as demonstrated by improper handling of BumpChunk objects.

GHSA-9V4W-R8XW-999H
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-08-22 15:33 – Updated: 2026-01-07 18:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
vsock: Do not allow binding to VMADDR_PORT_ANY
It is possible for a vsock to autobind to VMADDR_PORT_ANY. This can cause a use-after-free when a connection is made to the bound socket. The socket returned by accept() also has port VMADDR_PORT_ANY but is not on the list of unbound sockets. Binding it will result in an extra refcount decrement similar to the one fixed in fcdd2242c023 (vsock: Keep the binding until socket destruction).
Modify the check in __vsock_bind_connectible() to also prevent binding to VMADDR_PORT_ANY.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
