Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

10190 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Foxit PDF Reader AcroForm Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Foxit PDF Reader. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the handling of AcroForms. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-23002.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-24 18:32 – Updated: 2026-07-29 15:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

futex: Drop CLONE_THREAD requirement for private default hash alloc

Currently need_futex_hash_allocate_default() depends on strict pthread semantics, abusing CLONE_THREAD. This breaks the non-concurrency assumptions when doing the mm->futex_ref pcpu allocations, leading to bugs[0] when sharing the mm in other ways; ie:

BUG: KASAN: slab-use-after-free in futex_hash_put

... where the +1 bias can end up on a percpu counter that mm->futex_ref no longer points at.

Loosen the check to cover any CLONE_VM clone, except vfork(). Excluding vfork keeps the existing paths untouched (no overhead), and we can't race in the first place: either the parent is suspended and the child runs alone, or mm->futex_ref is already allocated from an earlier CLONE_VM.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

RDMA/irdma: Fix a window for use-after-free

During a destroy CQ an interrupt may cause processing of a CQE after CQ resources are freed by irdma_cq_free_rsrc(). Fix this by moving the call to irdma_cq_free_rsrc() after the irdma_sc_cleanup_ceqes(), which is called under the cq_lock.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

firmware: arm_scmi: Fix slab-use-after-free in scmi_bus_notifier()

The scmi_dev->name is released prematurely in __scmi_device_destroy(), which causes slab-use-after-free when accessing scmi_dev->name in scmi_bus_notifier(). So move the release of scmi_dev->name to scmi_device_release() to avoid slab-use-after-free.

Details

Foxit PDF Editor Caret Annotation Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Foxit PDF Editor. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the handling of Annotation objects. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-14364.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
