In versions 0.8.5 and earlier of uv, remote ZIP archives were handled in a streamwise fashion, and file entries were not reconciled against the archive's central directory. This enabled two parser differentials against other Python package installers:
- An attacker could contrive a ZIP archive that would extract with legitimate contents on some package installers, and malicious contents on others due to multiple local file entries. The attacker could choose which installer to target.
- An attacker could contrive a "stacked" ZIP input with multiple internal ZIPs, which would be handled differently by different package installers. The attacker could choose which installer to target.
In both cases, the outcome is that an attacker can produce a ZIP with a consistent digest that expands differently with different installers.
The ZIP standard is ambiguous with respect to these behavior differentials. Consequently, these same differentials may be accepted ZIP parsers other than those used in uv. This advisory is for uv in particular, but all consumers of ZIP-based Python package distributions, e.g., pip, are potentially susceptible to similar parser differentials in other ZIP parsers.
The practical impact of these differentials is limited by a number of factors:
- To be compromised via this vulnerability, user interaction of some sort is required. In particular, the user must run
uv install $packagewith an attacker-controlled$package. - When using wheel distributions, installation of the malicious package is not sufficient for execution of malicious code, the vicim would need to perform a separate invocation, e.g.,
python -c "import $package". - If a ZIP-based source distribution (which are less common than tarball source distributions), is encountered, malicious code can be executed during package resolution or installation. uv may invoke the malicious code when building the source distribution into a wheel.
- The practical impact of these differentials is limited by a coordinated fix to Warehouse, PyPI's backend: Warehouse now rejects ZIPs exhibiting these differentials, limiting the ability of an attacker to distribute malicious ZIP distributions via PyPI. As part of that coordinated fix, a review of Warehouse revealed no evidence of exploitation.
Patches
Versions 0.8.6 and newer of uv address both of the parser differentials above, by refusing to process ZIPs with duplicated local file entries or stacked contents.
Workarounds
Users are advised to upgrade to 0.8.6 or newer to address this advisory.
Most users should experience no breaking changes as a result of the patch above. However, users who do experience breakage should carefully review their distributions for signs of malicious intent. Users may choose to set UV_INSECURE_NO_ZIP_VALIDATION=1 to revert to the previous behavior.

This vulnerability was discovered separately by two different individuals: Caleb Brown (Google) and Tim Hatch (Netflix).

The curl security team has thus assessed this to be low severity bug.

A vulnerability in the Geth EVM could cause a node to reject the canonical chain.
Description
A memory-corruption bug within the EVM can cause a consensus error, where vulnerable nodes obtain a different stateRoot when processing a maliciously crafted transaction. This, in turn, would lead to the chain being split in two forks.
All Geth versions supporting the London hard fork are vulnerable (which predates London), so all users should update.
This bug was exploited on Mainnet at block 13107518, leading to a minority chain split.
Patches
A patch is included in the v1.10.8 release.
The exact patch to fix the issue is contained within this commit
Workarounds
No workarounds exist, save to update and/or apply the patch commit.

Description
When Bref is used in combination with an API Gateway with the v2 format, it does not handle multiple values headers.
Precisely, if PHP generates a response with two headers having the same key but different values only the latest one is kept.
Impact
If an application relies on multiple headers with the same key being set for security reasons, then Bref would lower the application security.
For example, if an application sets multiple Content-Security-Policy headers, then Bref would just reflect the latest one.

Insufficient validation of outbound header values may lead to request splitting or response splitting attacks in scenarios where attackers have sufficient control over outbound headers.
Details
Outbound trillium_http::HeaderValue and trillium_http::HeaderName can be constructed infallibly and were not checked for illegal bytes when sending requests from the client or responses from the server. Thus, if an attacker has sufficient control over header values (or names) in a request or response that they could inject \r\n sequences, they could get the client and server out of sync, and then pivot to gain control over other parts of requests or responses. (i.e. exfiltrating data from other requests, SSRF, etc.)
Patches
trillium-http >= 0.3.12:
- If a header name is invalid in server response headers, the specific header and any associated values are omitted from network transmission.
- If a header value is invalid in server response headers, the individual header value is omitted from network transmission. Other headers values with the same header name will still be sent.
trillium-client >= 0.5.4:
- If any header name or header value is invalid in the client request headers, awaiting the client Conn returns an
Error::MalformedHeaderprior to any network access.
Workarounds
trillium services and client applications should sanitize or validate untrusted input that is included in header values and header names. Carriage return, newline, and null characters are not allowed.
Impact
This only affects use cases where attackers have control of outbound headers, and can insert "\r\n" sequences. Specifically, if untrusted and unvalidated input is inserted into header names or values.
A note on timing from @jbr on behalf of trillium-rs
@divergentdave filed this vulnerability many months ago but I did not see it until the evening of Jan 23, 2024. Patches were issued less than 24h after reading the vulnerability. The security policy has been updated to avoid delays like this in the future.
