CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9874 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-09-13 06:30 – Updated: 2024-09-13 18:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
drm/xe: prevent UAF around preempt fence
The fence lock is part of the queue, therefore in the current design anything locking the fence should then also hold a ref to the queue to prevent the queue from being freed.
However, currently it looks like we signal the fence and then drop the queue ref, but if something is waiting on the fence, the waiter is kicked to wake up at some later point, where upon waking up it first grabs the lock before checking the fence state. But if we have already dropped the queue ref, then the lock might already be freed as part of the queue, leading to uaf.
To prevent this, move the fence lock into the fence itself so we don't run into lifetime issues. Alternative might be to have device level lock, or only release the queue in the fence release callback, however that might require pushing to another worker to avoid locking issues.

GHSA-W6V7-MJP2-PWCF
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-02-27 12:31 – Updated: 2024-04-10 21:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
usb: gadget: f_fs: Clear ffs_eventfd in ffs_data_clear.
ffs_data_clear is indirectly called from both ffs_fs_kill_sb and ffs_ep0_release, so it ends up being called twice when userland closes ep0 and then unmounts f_fs. If userland provided an eventfd along with function's USB descriptors, it ends up calling eventfd_ctx_put as many times, causing a refcount underflow. NULL-ify ffs_eventfd to prevent these extraneous eventfd_ctx_put calls.
Also, set epfiles to NULL right after de-allocating it, for readability.
For completeness, ffs_data_clear actually ends up being called thrice, the last call being before the whole ffs structure gets freed, so when this specific sequence happens there is a second underflow happening (but not being reported):

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-11-22 21:32 – Updated: 2024-11-22 21:32Trimble SketchUp Viewer SKP File Parsing Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Trimble SketchUp Viewer. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of SKP files. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-24107.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-06-19 15:30 – Updated: 2024-10-17 15:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
RDMA/hns: Fix UAF for cq async event
The refcount of CQ is not protected by locks. When CQ asynchronous events and CQ destruction are concurrent, CQ may have been released, which will cause UAF.
Use the xa_lock() to protect the CQ refcount.

GHSA-W75G-VP3J-WH29
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-06-18 12:30 – Updated: 2025-11-14 21:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
wifi: mac80211: Fix UAF in ieee80211_scan_rx()
ieee80211_scan_rx() tries to access scan_req->flags after a null check, but a UAF is observed when the scan is completed and __ieee80211_scan_completed() executes, which then calls cfg80211_scan_done() leading to the freeing of scan_req.
Since scan_req is rcu_dereference()'d, prevent the racing in __ieee80211_scan_completed() by ensuring that from mac80211's POV it is no longer accessed from an RCU read critical section before we call cfg80211_scan_done().

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
