Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-416

Allowed

Use After Free

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable

The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

9987 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Hancom Office Word DOC File Parsing Use-After-Free Remote Code Execution Vulnerability. This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Hancom Office Word. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.

The specific flaw exists within the parsing of DOC files. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-20384.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nfsd: make sure exp active before svc_export_show

The function e_show was called with protection from RCU. This only ensures that exp will not be freed. Therefore, the reference count for exp can drop to zero, which will trigger a refcount use-after-free warning when exp_get is called. To resolve this issue, use cache_get_rcu to ensure that exp remains active.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-01-25 15:30 – Updated: 2026-03-25 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: octeon_ep_vf: fix free_irq dev_id mismatch in IRQ rollback

octep_vf_request_irqs() requests MSI-X queue IRQs with dev_id set to ioq_vector. If request_irq() fails part-way, the rollback loop calls free_irq() with dev_id set to 'oct', which does not match the original dev_id and may leave the irqaction registered.

This can keep IRQ handlers alive while ioq_vector is later freed during unwind/teardown, leading to a use-after-free or crash when an interrupt fires.

Fix the error path to free IRQs with the same ioq_vector dev_id used during request_irq().

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-24 16:47 – Updated: 2022-10-14 12:00
VLAI
Details

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable installations of Foxit Reader 9.4.1.16828. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the removeField method when processing AcroForms. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-8165.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Strategy: Language Selection

Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.

Mitigation
Implementation

Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction

When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
