CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
9999 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

GHSA-R3P6-JGGX-M3QG
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-05-01 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-07 00:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
smb: client: fix UAF in decryption with multichannel
After commit f7025d861694 ("smb: client: allocate crypto only for primary server") and commit b0abcd65ec54 ("smb: client: fix UAF in async decryption"), the channels started reusing AEAD TFM from primary channel to perform synchronous decryption, but that can't done as there could be multiple cifsd threads (one per channel) simultaneously accessing it to perform decryption.
This fixes the following KASAN splat when running fstest generic/249 with 'vers=3.1.1,multichannel,max_channels=4,seal' against Windows Server 2022:

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-14 01:57 – Updated: 2022-05-14 01:57An exploitable use-after-free vulnerability exists in the JavaScript engine of Foxit Reader before 9.3 and PhantomPDF before 9.3, a different vulnerability than CVE-2018-16291, CVE-2018-16292, CVE-2018-16293, CVE-2018-16294, CVE-2018-16295, and CVE-2018-16297. A specially crafted PDF document can trigger a previously freed object in memory to be reused, resulting in arbitrary code execution. An attacker needs to trick the user to open the malicious file to trigger this vulnerability. If the browser plugin extension is enabled, visiting a malicious site can also trigger the vulnerability.

This vulnerability allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on affected installations of Maxon Cinema 4D. User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file.
The specific flaw exists within the parsing of SKP files. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-21439.

GHSA-R426-G4W9-X3Q5
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-02-27 21:32 – Updated: 2025-02-27 21:32In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
mt76: mt7921: fix crash when startup fails.
If the nic fails to start, it is possible that the reset_work has already been scheduled. Ensure the work item is canceled so we do not have use-after-free crash in case cleanup is called before the work item is executed.
This fixes crash on my x86_64 apu2 when mt7921k radio fails to work. Radio still fails, but OS does not crash.

GHSA-R42X-VW8P-W99G
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-02-27 18:31 – Updated: 2025-02-27 18:31In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
scsi: target: tcmu: Fix possible page UAF
tcmu_try_get_data_page() looks up pages under cmdr_lock, but it does not take refcount properly and just returns page pointer. When tcmu_try_get_data_page() returns, the returned page may have been freed by tcmu_blocks_release().
We need to get_page() under cmdr_lock to avoid concurrent tcmu_blocks_release().

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
