CWE-416
AllowedUse After Free
Abstraction: Variant · Status: Stable
The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.
10188 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-06-24 18:32 – Updated: 2026-07-23 21:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
PCI: use generic driver_override infrastructure
When a driver is probed through __driver_attach(), the bus' match() callback is called without the device lock held, thus accessing the driver_override field without a lock, which can cause a UAF.
Fix this by using the driver-core driver_override infrastructure taking care of proper locking internally.
Note that calling match() from __driver_attach() without the device lock held is intentional. [1]

GHSA-95VC-3FW2-MXM8
Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-05-01 15:31 – Updated: 2025-11-07 00:30In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:
drm/imagination: take paired job reference
For paired jobs, have the fragment job take a reference on the geometry job, so that the geometry job cannot be freed until the fragment job has finished with it.
The geometry job structure is accessed when the fragment job is being prepared by the GPU scheduler. Taking the reference prevents the geometry job being freed until the fragment job no longer requires it.
Fixes a use after free bug detected by KASAN:

User interaction is required to exploit this vulnerability in that the target must visit a malicious page or open a malicious file. The specific flaw exists within the handling of AcroForms. The issue results from the lack of validating the existence of an object prior to performing operations on the object. An attacker can leverage this vulnerability to execute code in the context of the current process. Was ZDI-CAN-17661.

Mitigation
Strategy: Language Selection
Choose a language that provides automatic memory management.
Mitigation
Strategy: Attack Surface Reduction
When freeing pointers, be sure to set them to NULL once they are freed. However, the utilization of multiple or complex data structures may lower the usefulness of this strategy.
No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
