CWE-401

Allowed

Missing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft

The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, making the memory unavailable for reallocation and reuse.

2105 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mm/damon/vaddr-test: fix memory leak in damon_do_test_apply_three_regions()

When CONFIG_DAMON_VADDR_KUNIT_TEST=y and making CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK=y and CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_AUTO_SCAN=y, the below memory leak is detected.

Since commit 9f86d624292c ("mm/damon/vaddr-test: remove unnecessary variables"), the damon_destroy_ctx() is removed, but still call damon_new_target() and damon_new_region(), the damon_region which is allocated by kmem_cache_alloc() in damon_new_region() and the damon_target which is allocated by kmalloc in damon_new_target() are not freed. And the damon_region which is allocated in damon_new_region() in damon_set_regions() is also not freed.

So use damon_destroy_target to free all the damon_regions and damon_target.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-10-07 18:31 – Updated: 2026-02-04 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

media: solo6x10: fix possible memory leak in solo_sysfs_init()

If device_register() returns error in solo_sysfs_init(), the name allocated by dev_set_name() need be freed. As comment of device_register() says, it should use put_device() to give up the reference in the error path. So fix this by calling put_device(), then the name can be freed in kobject_cleanup().

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

block: fix zones_cond memory leak on zone revalidation error paths

When blk_revalidate_disk_zones() fails after disk_revalidate_zone_resources() has allocated args.zones_cond, the memory is leaked because no error path frees it.

Details

A particular case of memory sharing is mishandled in the virtual memory system. This is very similar to SA-21:08.vm, but with a different root cause.

An unprivileged local user process can maintain a mapping of a page after it is freed, allowing that process to read private data belonging to other processes or the kernel.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-03-17 21:30 – Updated: 2025-03-17 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

staging: rtl8712: fix a potential memory leak in r871xu_drv_init()

In r871xu_drv_init(), if r8712_init_drv_sw() fails, then the memory allocated by r8712_alloc_io_queue() in r8712_usb_dvobj_init() is not properly released as there is no action will be performed by r8712_usb_dvobj_deinit(). To properly release it, we should call r8712_free_io_queue() in r8712_usb_dvobj_deinit().

Besides, in r871xu_dev_remove(), r8712_usb_dvobj_deinit() will be called by r871x_dev_unload() under condition padapter->bup and r8712_free_io_queue() is called by r8712_free_drv_sw(). However, r8712_usb_dvobj_deinit() does not rely on padapter->bup and calling r8712_free_io_queue() in r8712_free_drv_sw() is negative for better understading the code. So I move r8712_usb_dvobj_deinit() into r871xu_dev_remove(), and remove r8712_free_io_queue() from r8712_free_drv_sw().

GHSA-675X-JH39-GVRQ

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2024-06-20 12:31 – Updated: 2025-09-17 18:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: ieee802154: ca8210: Stop leaking skb's

Upon error the ieee802154_xmit_complete() helper is not called. Only ieee802154_wake_queue() is called manually. We then leak the skb structure.

Free the skb structure upon error before returning.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-06-18 12:30 – Updated: 2025-11-18 03:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

RDMA/qedr: Fix potential memory leak in __qedr_alloc_mr()

__qedr_alloc_mr() allocates a memory chunk for "mr->info.pbl_table" with init_mr_info(). When rdma_alloc_tid() and rdma_register_tid() fail, "mr" is released while "mr->info.pbl_table" is not released, which will lead to a memory leak.

We should release the "mr->info.pbl_table" with qedr_free_pbl() when error occurs to fix the memory leak.

Mitigation MIT-41
Implementation

Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks

  • Choose a language or tool that provides automatic memory management, or makes manual memory management less error-prone.
  • For example, glibc in Linux provides protection against free of invalid pointers.
  • When using Xcode to target OS X or iOS, enable automatic reference counting (ARC) [REF-391].
  • To help correctly and consistently manage memory when programming in C++, consider using a smart pointer class such as std::auto_ptr (defined by ISO/IEC ISO/IEC 14882:2003), std::shared_ptr and std::unique_ptr (specified by an upcoming revision of the C++ standard, informally referred to as C++ 1x), or equivalent solutions such as Boost.
Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Use an abstraction library to abstract away risky APIs. Not a complete solution.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design Build and Compilation

Consider using the Boehm-Demers-Weiser garbage collector (bdwgc), which can help avoid leaks.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
