Common Weakness Enumeration

CWE-401

Allowed

Missing Release of Memory after Effective Lifetime

Abstraction: Variant · Status: Draft

The product does not sufficiently track and release allocated memory after it has been used, making the memory unavailable for reallocation and reuse.

2158 vulnerabilities reference this CWE, most recent first.

GHSA-W7XC-X24C-MG52

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2025-04-01 18:30 – Updated: 2025-10-31 21:30
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

net: mctp: unshare packets when reassembling

Ensure that the frag_list used for reassembly isn't shared with other packets. This avoids incorrect reassembly when packets are cloned, and prevents a memory leak due to circular references between fragments and their skb_shared_info.

The upcoming MCTP-over-USB driver uses skb_clone which can trigger the problem - other MCTP drivers don't share SKBs.

A kunit test is added to reproduce the issue.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2026-07-19 18:31 – Updated: 2026-08-17 21:31
VLAI
Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

pds_core: fix debugfs_lookup dentry leak and error handling

debugfs_lookup() returns a dentry with an elevated reference count that must be released with dput(). The current code discards the returned dentry without calling dput(), causing a reference leak on every firmware reset recovery.

Additionally, when CONFIG_DEBUG_FS is disabled, debugfs_lookup() returns ERR_PTR(-ENODEV), not NULL. The current check passes for error pointers and would call dput() on an invalid pointer, causing a crash.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

dmaengine: idxd: Fix leaking event log memory

During the device remove process, the device is reset, causing the configuration registers to go back to their default state, which is zero. As the driver is checking if the event log support was enabled before deallocating, it will fail if a reset happened before.

Do not check if the support was enabled, the check for 'idxd->evl' being valid (only allocated if the HW capability is available) is enough.

Details

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

bpf, sockmap: Fix panic when calling skb_linearize

The panic can be reproduced by executing the command: ./bench sockmap -c 2 -p 1 -a --rx-verdict-ingress --rx-strp 100000

Then a kernel panic was captured: ''' [ 657.460555] kernel BUG at net/core/skbuff.c:2178! [ 657.462680] Tainted: [W]=WARN [ 657.463287] Workqueue: events sk_psock_backlog ... The panic originates from the assertion BUG_ON(skb_shared(skb)) in skb_linearize(). A previous commit(see Fixes tag) introduced skb_get() to avoid race conditions between skb operations in the backlog and skb release in the recvmsg path. However, this caused the panic to always occur when skb_linearize is executed.

The "--rx-strp 100000" parameter forces the RX path to use the strparser module which aggregates data until it reaches 100KB before calling sockmap logic. The 100KB payload exceeds MAX_MSG_FRAGS, triggering skb_linearize.

To fix this issue, just move skb_get into sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue.

''' sk_psock_backlog: sk_psock_handle_skb skb_get(skb) <== we move it into 'sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue' sk_psock_skb_ingress__ ↓ | | → sk_psock_skb_ingress_self | sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue sk_psock_verdict_apply___↑ skb_linearize '''

Note that for verdict_apply path, the skb_get operation is unnecessary so we add 'take_ref' param to control it's behavior.

A previous commit(see Fixes tag) introduced skb_get()
to avoid race conditions between skb operations in the backlog and skb
release in the recvmsg path. However, this caused the panic to always
occur when skb_linearize is executed.

The "--rx-strp 100000" parameter forces the RX path to use the strparser
module which aggregates data until it reaches 100KB before calling sockmap
logic. The 100KB payload exceeds MAX_MSG_FRAGS, triggering skb_linearize.

To fix this issue, just move skb_get into sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue.

'''
sk_psock_backlog:
    sk_psock_handle_skb
       skb_get(skb) <== we move it into 'sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue'
       sk_psock_skb_ingress____________
                                       ↓
                                       |
                                       | → sk_psock_skb_ingress_self
                                       | sk_psock_skb_ingress_enqueue
sk_psock_verdict_apply_________________↑ skb_linearize
'''

Note that for verdict_apply path, the skb_get operation is unnecessary so
we add 'take_ref' param to control it's behavior.",

VLAI
Details

When a client-side HTTP/2 profile and the HTTP MRF Router option are enabled for a virtual server, and an iRule using the HTTP_REQUEST event or Local Traffic Policy are associated with the virtual server, undisclosed requests can cause TMM to terminate. Note: Software versions which have reached End of Technical Support (EoTS) are not evaluated.

Vulnerability from github – Published: 2022-05-02 04:00 – Updated: 2025-04-11 03:50
VLAI
Details

Memory leak in the embedded_profile_len function in pngwutil.c in libpng before 1.2.39beta5 allows context-dependent attackers to cause a denial of service (memory leak or segmentation fault) via a JPEG image containing an iCCP chunk with a negative embedded profile length. NOTE: this is due to an incomplete fix for CVE-2006-7244.

Mitigation MIT-41
Implementation

Strategy: Libraries or Frameworks

  • Choose a language or tool that provides automatic memory management, or makes manual memory management less error-prone.
  • For example, glibc in Linux provides protection against free of invalid pointers.
  • When using Xcode to target OS X or iOS, enable automatic reference counting (ARC) [REF-391].
  • To help correctly and consistently manage memory when programming in C++, consider using a smart pointer class such as std::auto_ptr (defined by ISO/IEC ISO/IEC 14882:2003), std::shared_ptr and std::unique_ptr (specified by an upcoming revision of the C++ standard, informally referred to as C++ 1x), or equivalent solutions such as Boost.
Mitigation
Architecture and Design

Use an abstraction library to abstract away risky APIs. Not a complete solution.

Mitigation
Architecture and Design Build and Compilation

Consider using the Boehm-Demers-Weiser garbage collector (bdwgc), which can help avoid leaks.

No CAPEC attack patterns related to this CWE.
