resolvePartial() in the Handlebars runtime resolves partial names via a plain property lookup on options.partials without guarding against prototype-chain traversal. When Object.prototype has been polluted with a string value whose key matches a partial reference in a template, the polluted string is used as the partial body and rendered without HTML escaping, resulting in reflected or stored XSS.
Description
The root cause is in lib/handlebars/runtime.js inside resolvePartial() and invokePartial():
// Vulnerable: plain bracket access traverses Object.prototype
partial = options.partials[options.name];
hasOwnProperty is never checked, so if Object.prototype has been seeded with a key whose name matches a partial reference in the template (e.g. widget), the lookup succeeds and the polluted string is returned. The runtime emits a prototype-access warning, but the partial is still resolved and its content is inserted into the rendered output unescaped. This contradicts the documented security model and is distinct from CVE-2021-23369 and CVE-2021-23383, which addressed data property access rather than partial template resolution.
Prerequisites for exploitation:
1. The target application must be vulnerable to prototype pollution (e.g. via qs, minimist, or
any querystring/JSON merge sink).
2. The attacker must know or guess the name of a partial reference used in a template.

Workarounds
- Apply
Object.freeze(Object.prototype)early in application startup to prevent prototype pollution. Note: this may break other libraries. - Use the Handlebars runtime-only build (
handlebars/runtime), which does not compile templates and reduces the attack surface.

A prototype pollution vulnerability allowed a crafted public webhook payload to inject attacker-controlled fields into workflow data during internal object copying. These fields could be surfaced and consumed as normal values by downstream built-in nodes.
Where a workflow combines a public webhook with action nodes that consume the resulting fields, an attacker could cause the workflow to act as a confused deputy — targeting unintended records or issuing outbound requests using the workflow owner's configured credentials.
Patches
The issue has been fixed in n8n versions 2.25.7, and 2.26.2. Users should upgrade to one of these versions or later to remediate the vulnerability.
Workarounds
If upgrading is not immediately possible, administrators should consider the following temporary mitigations: - Avoid exposing public (unauthenticated) webhook workflows that pass incoming data through transform nodes into action nodes with sensitive credentials or database operations. - Limit workflow creation and editing permissions to fully trusted users only.
These workarounds do not fully remediate the risk and should only be used as short-term mitigation measures.

If an attacker can control parts of the path argument to the set function, they could potentially modify the prototype of all objects in the JavaScript runtime, leading to unexpected behavior, denial of service, or even remote code execution in some specific scenarios.
Patches
The vulnerability has been patched in commit 8147abc8cfc3cfe9b9a17cd389076a5d97235a66. Users should upgrade to a version of Radashi that includes this commit. The fix utilizes a new helper function, isDangerousKey, to prevent the use of __proto__, prototype, or constructor as keys in the path, throwing an error if any are encountered. This check is bypassed for objects with a null prototype.
Workarounds
Users on older versions can mitigate this vulnerability by sanitizing the path argument provided to the set function to ensure that no part of the path string is __proto__, prototype, or constructor. For example, by checking each segment of the path before passing it to the set function.

CAPEC-1: Accessing Functionality Not Properly Constrained by ACLs
In applications, particularly web applications, access to functionality is mitigated by an authorization framework. This framework maps Access Control Lists (ACLs) to elements of the application's functionality; particularly URL's for web apps. In the case that the administrator failed to specify an ACL for a particular element, an attacker may be able to access it with impunity. An attacker with the ability to access functionality not properly constrained by ACLs can obtain sensitive information and possibly compromise the entire application. Such an attacker can access resources that must be available only to users at a higher privilege level, can access management sections of the application, or can run queries for data that they otherwise not supposed to.
CAPEC-180: Exploiting Incorrectly Configured Access Control Security Levels
An attacker exploits a weakness in the configuration of access controls and is able to bypass the intended protection that these measures guard against and thereby obtain unauthorized access to the system or network. Sensitive functionality should always be protected with access controls. However configuring all but the most trivial access control systems can be very complicated and there are many opportunities for mistakes. If an attacker can learn of incorrectly configured access security settings, they may be able to exploit this in an attack.
CAPEC-77: Manipulating User-Controlled Variables
This attack targets user controlled variables (DEBUG=1, PHP Globals, and So Forth). An adversary can override variables leveraging user-supplied, untrusted query variables directly used on the application server without any data sanitization. In extreme cases, the adversary can change variables controlling the business logic of the application. For instance, in languages like PHP, a number of poorly set default configurations may allow the user to override variables.
