CVE-2024-40949 — mm: shmem: fix getting incorrect lruvec when replacing a shmem folio

Affected: Linux

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

mm: shmem: fix getting incorrect lruvec when replacing a shmem folio

When testing shmem swapin, I encountered the warning below on my machine.
The reason is that replacing an old shmem folio with a new one causes
mem_cgroup_migrate() to clear the old folio's memcg data. As a result,
the old folio cannot get the correct memcg's lruvec needed to remove
itself from the LRU list when it is being freed. This could lead to
possible serious problems, such as LRU list crashes due to holding the
wrong LRU lock, and incorrect LRU statistics.

To fix this issue, we can fallback to use the mem_cgroup_replace_folio()
to replace the old shmem folio.

USN-6999-1 — linux, linux-aws, linux-gcp, linux-gke, linux-ibm, linux-lowlatency, linux-oem-6.8, linux-oracle vulnerabilities

Affected: Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux-aws, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux-gcp, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux-gke, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux-ibm, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux-lowlatency, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux-oem-6.8, Ubuntu:24.04:LTS: linux-oracle

Chenyuan Yang discovered that the CEC driver driver in the Linux kernel
contained a use-after-free vulnerability. A local attacker could use this
to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary
code. (CVE-2024-23848)

It was discovered that the JFS file system contained an out-of-bounds read
vulnerability when printing xattr debug information. A local attacker could
use this to cause a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2024-40902)

Several security issues were discovered in the Linux kernel.
An attacker could possibly use these to compromise the system.
This update corrects flaws in the following subsystems:
 - ARM64 architecture;
 - MIPS architecture;
 - PA-RISC architecture;
 - PowerPC architecture;
 - RISC-V architecture;
 - x86 architecture;
 - Block layer subsystem;
 - ACPI drivers;
 - Drivers core;
 - Null block device driver;

 - TPM device driver;
 - Clock framework and drivers;
 - CPU frequency scaling framework;
